We are so proud that we have continued to have outstanding participation levels at our COVID-19 vaccination clinics! Many of our communities have already wrapped up their second clinics and the rest will be completed by the end of February. Then, we have third clinics scheduled for anyone who still needs their second dose coming in March. Additionally, Washington state has eased restrictions in our Safe Start Phase 1 Guidance to allow us to have controlled small group activities, small group dining, and limited salon services at our Washington communities. Today we reached an important milestone: Every Aegis Living community has finished its first round of vaccines! Second clinics are well underway, and all second and third clinics are now confirmed by CVS. Staff and resident participation has been phenomenal, but we’re not done yet! We’re eager to reach a point where all of our residents and staff are fully vaccinated. We’re happy to report that nearly all residents and staff are opting to receive the vaccine. We’re excited to share that our first COVID-19 vaccine clinics have been scheduled for all 32 Aegis communities—and 75% of the communities have already hosted that first clinic. We have now turned focus to scheduling our second and third vaccine clinics and are optimistic those will all be confirmed soon as well. We have been blown away by the enthusiasm of both residents and staff participating in vaccine clinics thus far. Nearly all residents and staff are opting to receive the vaccine. Our community teams have not only worked hard to prepare for the vaccine clinics, but to make the days extra-special celebrations – from choosing creative themes like “COVID No More” and “Saturday Night No Fever” to bringing in custom t-shirts, photo booths, balloon displays, and special treats like Jell-O “shots” and cookies decorated with masks.

Vaccination clinics are underway at Aegis Living, and we have now hosted the first clinic at over half of our 32 communities. We are anticipating all communities will have hosted clinics by early February, which is very exciting news. We are already working hard with our pharmacy partner CVS to schedule the second dose of the two-part vaccine for all residents and staff. According to the CDC and other medical sources, for those who complete their second dose, we can expect the vaccine to be in effect within two weeks. This is an incredible milestone, and our goal continues to be having 100% of our residents and staff vaccinated. This will help us better protect one another. We’re excited to share the fantastic news that after this weekend, we will have completed vaccine clinics at almost half of our Aegis Living communities, and we have dates for our other communities coming very soon. In every clinic, we’ve been able to vaccinate almost all of our residents and over 75% (on average) of our team members. It’s important to note that there has not been a single adverse reaction. As we schedule second follow-up clinics, we are working toward 100% vaccination, which is what is going to keep our communities safe.
On Wednesday this week, we hosted our first vaccination clinic at Aegis Living Moraga. Regional General Manager Bill Phelps was the first Aegis team member to officially receive the Pfizer vaccine. We are thrilled for all of our residents and team members at Moraga who are now one step closer to living healthy lives and will soon be protected against COVID-19. Our Vaccine Task Force is hard at work scheduling COVID-19 vaccine clinics for residents and staff at every one of our communities. We’re happy to share that we have several additional communities confirmed, and we’re working fast and furiously with our CVS Pharmacy Partner to schedule the remaining vaccine clinics. We are all grateful for our amazing teams who have been working diligently to prepare for the clinics to start and making sure we are ready to go.
On Monday, December 14th, the first coronavirus vaccinations took place in the U.S., opening a new, hopeful chapter in the battle against this pandemic. The vaccinations started after the Food and Drug Administration’s emergency authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine late last week. Nearly 3 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are arriving at 636 locations in the next several days. We are overjoyed that the CDC has recommended front line health care workers and seniors in long term care receive these first doses. We are working closely with our pharmacy partner CVS to schedule the first of three clinics in each of our communities, where we will deliver the vaccine to our residents and teams. We are working as quickly as possible to confirm the dates of these clinics over the next two weeks. As soon as we have confirmed the vaccination schedule for each community, we will share updates. Today, the FDA’s Vaccine Advisory Committee did overwhelmingly recommend the approval of the Pfizer vaccine. This paves the way for formal FDA approval, which is expected shortly.
We have been actively working with our pharmacy partner CVS to schedule the first of three clinics in each of our communities, where we will deliver the vaccine to our residents and teams. With today’s recommendation, we believe we will be able to quickly confirm the dates of these clinics over the next two weeks. While it is ultimately up to individual states to decide how the vaccine inventory is distributed, based on what we know today, we do expect to see many of our communities begin to see vaccinations take place in the next few weeks. As soon as we have confirmed the vaccination schedule for each community, we will share updates.
As of today, we believe our communities will likely receive the Pfizer vaccine. CVS will visit each of our communities over the course of a three-week period to provide our residents and team members with the two separate shots required by the Pfizer vaccine. We will ask approval for each resident to accept the vaccination well in advance of the actual clinic.
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, if formally approved by the FDA, would be the first vaccines using messenger RNA technology. It is different from more traditional vaccines, which often use a weakened or dead version of a virus, or a laboratory-generated protein. Both vaccines use a snippet of the virus’ genetic code to instruct cells to build the spike protein on the surface of the coronavirus, teaching the immune system to recognize the live virus.
On Tuesday, the FDA published a great deal of data on the research and results associated with Pfizer vaccine clinical trials. There is broad agreement the vaccine is safe and will quickly provide critical protection to those who receive it.
As you may have seen in today’s headlines, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices yesterday voted to prioritize residents of long-term care communities and front-line health care workers to be the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. While the final decision on who actually receives the vaccine will sit with individual states, this is great news for ALL seniors. And, it’s exactly what we all hoped would happen. Our seniors have earned the right to be the first vaccinated—alongside those who care for them.
Over the last few weeks, we have actively registered each our communities with CVS Pharmacy, our primary pharmacy provider and one of the organizations that has been formally approved by the Department of Health & Human Services to administer the vaccine through the Pharmacy for Long-Term Care Program. The next step is for the FDA to formally approve the available vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna) that have been tested and are ready for distribution. Based on what we know today, we believe vaccine approval could come in the next two weeks. Following that approval, we expect that our community residents and staff could begin receiving the vaccine in the next few weeks.
As many of you know, at the beginning of the pandemic, we assembled our own Aegis Coronavirus Advisory Council, made up of a group of best-in-class physicians from a variety of relevant backgrounds and from a number of prestigious medical institutions deeply involved in the virus response—including Fred Hutch, the University of Washington and the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. This group has been instrumental in providing Aegis with clinical guidance and advice at every stage of the pandemic, to help us meet our goal of providing the safest environment for seniors anywhere. We are in close consultation with the Council on the two vaccines we expect to come available. Based on early conversations with this group, we will be recommending each of our residents and team members take the vaccine in their community when it becomes available. Among Dr. Fauci, our Coronavirus Council, and numerous medical institutions, there is broad agreement both vaccines are safe for our seniors and the faster we can get it, the better.
We are in close contact with federal, state, and local health authorities. We’re also in regular communication with our CVS Pharmacy partner, who we expect will be delivering the vaccines to our residents and team members onsite in our communities. When we know more, we will share it with you.
