# Hospice Care: End-of-Life Care

> Dignified hospice care coordinated in your loved one's familiar apartment — around-the-clock comfort, gentle symptom relief, and family support across WA, CA & NV.

## Dignified end-of-life care

Hospice is a service, not a separate facility, which means your loved one can remain in their familiar Áegis Living apartment while a trusted hospice team provides comfort-focused medical care and our 24/7 caregivers handle daily support, coordination, and reassurance for the whole family.

## Step inside Áegis Living

## When is hospice the right choice?

Hospice is specialized, comfort-focused care for people in the last phase of a serious illness. It's about pain relief, calm, and helping families be together, not more hospital trips or aggressive treatment.

It's usually considered when a doctor believes time may be limited, treatments are asking more of your loved one than they give back, or when comfort becomes the priority. Hospice steps in as an extra layer of support—managing symptoms, surrounding both your loved one and your family with guidance, and helping you shape the days ahead around what matters most to you, in the place they already call home.

## Who does what

- **Your hospice agency** — Your hospice team brings the hospice aide, social worker, chaplain, bereavement support, comfort medications, and needed medical equipment—all focused on expert symptom relief and guidance.
- **Áegis Living** — Áegis provides the apartment, 24/7 caregivers, chef-prepared meals adapted to changing appetite, medication reminders, repositioning and hands-on support, emotional care for family, and the familiar relationships your loved one already trusts.
- **Your family** — You stay overnight, share meals in the apartment, bring pets, and focus on being present.

## Comfort and dignity, in every detail.

- **Supporting daily life** — Respectful help with bathing, grooming, medications, and mobility—so everyday tasks stay manageable and dignified.
- **Emotional support** — Steady reassurance and guidance for families, with someone to walk alongside you through each step of this chapter.
- **Partnership & communication** — Clear, frequent updates and every encouragement to spend meaningful time with your loved one, not manage logistics.
- **Familiar comforts** — Favorite meals, familiar faces, pets, and the small rituals that make an apartment feel like home.

## What comfort-first care looks like day to day

Gentle pain and symptom relief overseen by hospice clinicians. Dignified help with bathing, grooming, and mobility. Calm rooms, familiar music, and caregivers who know your loved one's preferences. Discreet, attentive support so help is always close at hand — in a warm, home-like setting that never feels clinical.

> In life's final chapter, the goal is not simply more days — it is honoring the person in a peaceful, home-like setting where families can focus on being present together.
> — Inspired by Atul Gawande, Being Mortal

## Frequently asked questions

### Can my parent stay in their Áegis Living apartment during hospice?

Yes. Current Áegis Living residents remain in their familiar apartment when they elect hospice. The hospice team visits them in place, and our 24/7 caregivers continue the daily routines and relationships they already know.

### Who pays for hospice when my loved one lives at Áegis Living?

The hospice agency bills Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance for hospice services, related medications, and equipment. You continue paying Áegis Living for the apartment, meals, and supportive care, with care levels adjusted to match the new plan.

### Can someone move into Áegis Living specifically for hospice?

Yes. New residents can move in while already enrolled in hospice. A community advisor coordinates with your hospice agency and our nursing team builds an aligned care plan before move-in day.

### How is hospice different from palliative care?

Palliative care focuses on comfort at any stage of serious illness and can run alongside curative treatment. Hospice is a specific Medicare benefit that brings comfort-first care to the final months when families have chosen to set curative treatment aside, per the National Institute on Aging.

### Do you have a preferred hospice agency?

You're always free to choose your own hospice agency, or we can recommend a trusted local provider. The decision belongs to you.

### What does care look like in the final chapter at Áegis Living?

The hospice RN keeps the comfort plan current while our caregivers tend to every detail — gentle repositioning, familiar music, and a calm, peaceful room. Family can stay overnight, share meals in the apartment, and remain present as much as they wish, with caring bereavement support continuing for as long as you need it.
