Reminders: How you can help protect yourself and others
Symptoms of the coronavirus include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Patients reportedly have mild to severe respiratory illness. If you or a family member is sick, please stay home and away from others and seek medical attention. If you have come into direct contact with someone who is ill with the symptoms listed above, or have a heightened concern that you or any member of your family has been directly exposed to the virus, please seek medical attention and stay home.
To reinforce good hygiene you can take these preventive actions:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
- Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces.
- Stay at home and away from others if you are feeling ill.
People who are at higher risk of illness may want to consider other ways to lower their risk of infection, such as limiting contact with crowds. This includes people age 60 and older, those with underlying health conditions such as heart or lung disease, and those who are immune compromised. Individuals with underlying health issues should talk to their healthcare provider to develop a plan based on their specific health conditions.
Travel Advisories

As of Monday, March 3, countries under “Warning Level 3: Avoid Nonessential Travel” due to coronavirus outbreaks or breakdown of health care infrastructure are: China (currently not including Hong Kong, Macau, or the Island of Taiwan), South Korea, Italy, Iran, and Venezuela.
If you have recently traveled to any of these countries, you should contact your family doctor and/or the state public health/department of health for additional guidance.
