Our mom lived at Aegis for over 10 years with most years in their memory care area. She started in the regular assisted living apartment then transitioned to memory care after her dementia worsened. The building was very clean and was kept up to date like a five star hotel. We were there long enough to see building improvements like new furniture, floors, carpets and paint, etc.

The care staff was very patient with my mom. They found different activities for her as her health declined over the years. They worked hard to accommodate her changing needs. They had a very good care staff to resident ratio. You can’t expect one-to-one care for an assisted living facility, but they tried to keep the same care staff assigned to our mom over the years. This provided consistency of care and was a comfort to our mom.

Nursing staff was exceptional. We were always informed of any health changes. Even a bug bite was reported the day that they noticed. We were always able to talk with a nursing staff member when we called or get a call back within hours. All in all, our mom was very well cared for and we were treated like an extended family.

Our mom was at Aegis Gardens for a little over 2 1/2 years…There are many outstanding features of Aegis Gardens and here are some highlights:

1. The Care and the Staff. All of the care-givers and supervising staff are Asian and even though I did not speak Mandarin or Cantonese, you could immediately see the genuine care and concern they had for each resident. I could only visit on weekends, so it was an incredible relief to me that during the week, my Mom and Dad were being cared for by staff that were gentle, polite, respectful, cheerful and very patient. My mom’s care-givers became like family members to us and we looked forward to greeting and laughing with them each time we visited. Our family is convinced that it was the high quality of care that my mom received at Aegis that sustained her for so long — she was on hospice for over a year. Aegis Gardens seemed to have a knack for hiring care-givers that were very upbeat, happy and conscientious. This is their core strength.

2. The Facility. Aegis Gardens became like home to our family — it was Mom’s home. Aegis Gardens was already beautifully decorated with Asian artwork and furnishings, but every holiday was also celebrated with bright and cheerful decorations. Their Christmas and Chinese New Year’s celebrations were wonderful. Aegis Gardens is well maintained and very clean with no odors that are typical of an assisted living facility. They have beautiful gardens and patios in which we spent many memorable times with Dad and Mom.

3. Supervising Staff. Aegis Gardens has a wonderful [general manager], who is knowledgeable, friendly and caring with the residents and speaks Mandarin and Cantonese, which endears her to all the residents and their families. Since I only spoke English, it was good to be able to pick up the phone to speak or email directly with her. This is also a good thing to do with communicating medical and prescription drug use for your family member. They also have a wonderful activities director who has an incredibly high level of energy.

My mother-in-law is an 88-year-old Cantonese speaking Chinese woman, who has been a resident of Aegis Gardens for the past two years…At the onset, finding a suitable long term care facility for her was a challenge for my wife and I. When we first visited Aegis, we [could] tell from my mother-in-law’s expression that she became enamored by the facility’s warm and friendly staff, the pleasing background music, the beautiful silk dresses on display and the nicely printed menu outside of the dining room, reminiscent of an upscale hotel.

After two years of residency in the [memory care] section, we can attest that management is top notch, all the way to the genuinely friendly and caring caretakers, who do such a wonderful job of maintaining her health and engaging her in regular exercise and arts and crafts. Her physician sees her at the facility as does the clinician, who does her blood work. And as far as food is concerned, all we can say is that we have asked her on many occasions to dine out with us, but she declined saying that she prefers to dine at Aegis with her friends. And whenever she becomes combative, caretakers are well trained to redirect her attention to mitigate her anger. Moreover, on one of our visits, she was anxious to show off her newly learned, hula dancing movements while seated in her rolling walker. And on our most recent visit, she was proud to let us see the beautiful paper cutting she had made. In conclusion, Aegis Gardens has exceeded our expectations giving us a real peace of mind.

Aegis Gardens Fremont is a beautiful facility. It has the feel of being at a five star hotel. There is a beautifully landscaped courtyard and garden. It is quiet and feels very safe there. The staff there is excellent. They are very responsive, caring, nurturing, friendly, and hard-working. The daily activities are well planned, have a good variety. The activities coordinator is passionate about providing a stimulating environment for the residents. The managers keep the facility running smoothly. During most major holidays and celebrations, the lobby is beautifully decorated, and the activities and craft sessions reflect the holiday. Overall, we feel that we are getting good value for what we are paying.
