Our Makeover: Aegis Lodge’s Memory Care Floor
Renovations Completed February 2013
At Aegis Lodge, we are so excited to share with you the updates that we have made to our Life’s Neighborhood™ Memory Care program. Life’s Neighborhood is a nationally recognized program developed by Aegis Living to improve the quality of life and increase enjoyment for people living with memory loss.
To this end, Aegis Lodge has redesigned and renovated an entire floor of our community to maximize the number of memory care residents we can serve, and has updated features to meet their unique care needs.
This renovation has allowed for Aegis Lodge to:
- Increase our capacity from nine memory care apartments to 23 secured apartments.
- Increase the number of specifically trained care staff to meet the needs of those with memory loss.
- Enhance our activities program with designated activity space and updated programming.
- Build more common areas, including a demonstration kitchen, music café and dining room.
Our features and innovations in memory care include:
MEMORY CARE PROGRAMMING
We continuously strive to bring our residents the best programming to meet their changing needs and to help slow the progression of memory loss with a structure to socially engage our residents in a secured environment. Our new designated activities areas will allow our Activities Directors to provide a larger variety of programs, such as crafts, cooking demonstrations, music, reading, intergenerational activities, church services, walks and pet therapy.
INTERACTIVE LIFE SKILL STATIONS
Focusing on work, hobbies or pastimes, new themed stations have been placed throughout our memory care floor to create settings from the past that act as a mental nudge back to remembered skills and interests. Through music and video, these stations are wonderful tools to help our care staff interact with our residents and reminisce about the past.
Life’s Haven can transport our residents to a familiar place. A hand-painted mural by a local artist of a panoramic mountain view is a peaceful place to provide ease and redirection for residents who may be agitated and restless. Life’s Haven will incorporate five features for the senses to gently stimulate residents, who often become sensory-deprived because of their disease.
Motion sensors and emergency call buttons provide peace of mind by increasing the safety of the environment and enabling emergency assistance if necessary. Our motion sensors point toward the resident’s bed and track movement so a care staff member is paged when a resident gets out of bed.
At Aegis, we know the power that music has on our residents with dementia to calm them or bring them joy. Retro-designed radios with iPods can connect to a host of music options. Our care managers can customize a playlist for each resident and what they most enjoy to listen to.
Studies have shown that daily exposure to a specific light spectrum decreases agitation, symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder and depression, and slows the cognitive decline of those with Alzheimer’s and dementia. These lights are located in our new Life’s Neighborhood dining room.
Available in the memory care apartments of our Life’s Neighborhood community, dawn simulators are programmed to simulate sunrise over the one hour preceding desired waking time and sunset, which helps to re-set circadian rhythms and provide a natural start and end to the day.
SECURED OUTDOOR PATIO
Residents can benefit from regular outdoor exposure in our renovated, secured outdoor patio. In a beautiful park-like setting surrounded by trees, our residents can get natural light, fresh air and light exercise.
